"Goodbye, Farewell and Amen..."

Not "Goodbye..." just "See you later, mate!"

This month, Will Gauvin leaves Melbourne for the sunny shores of the US of A.

Will is a founding member of Spaced Out and a keen participant in all club activities, from committee meetings to mini-convention. He has delivered a club talk on "Cyber Space" and it was particularly pleasing to see him contribute stories to the newsletter and fanzine/anthology.

Will leaves for Atlanta, where he is already planning to hitch up with the "Outworlds" SF club, and we hope this will enable us to forge strong links between our two clubs.

Will’s departure is brought about by a two-year work commitment. We hope that at the end of this time, he might decide to return to our fold. We thank Will for his active past contribution to the club and for his friendship -- and we wish him well in his journeys ahead. Keep watching the skies, Will...

Farewell: Douglas Adams

Recent news has reached us of the passing of Douglas Adams, most famous for creating the definitive "Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy".

We hope that he might be sitting somewhere, in a Restaurant at the Edge of the Universe, pondering the meaning of 42 and the Infinite Improbability of it all...

Personal Tribute: Jan Hillier 1936 - 2001

I was shocked and saddened to learn of the recent death of Jan Hillier in a tragic accident.

I met Jan in the early 1990s through her volunteer work with the AIDS Candlelight Vigil.  Her fundraising exploits were already the stuff of legend, and in the brief time I knew her, I admired her for her enthusiastic approach to every activity she attempted.

Jan was not a member of Spaced Out, nor had she been involved with our club.  However, I believe she shared our common desire to see a better future and she was prepared to work towards that ideal.

Melbourne has lost a pioneer, a community leader and an activist.

In the coming years, others who know Jan better than I, will undoubtedly record her history more extensively than I ever could.  Still, I wish to pause and pay tribute to a remarkable woman.
